For Goldcorp Inc., one of the world’s largest gold producers with operations throughout the Americas, sustainable and responsible mining is a company-wide commitment. We aspire to be a leader in finding innovative ways to create long-lasting social and economic benefits through every phase of the mining lifecycle – from exploration to operation to the eventual closure and reclamation of a mine. Ultimately, we strive to make sure that the places where we operate are left in as good or better condition than how we found them.

As a signatory to the UN Global Compact in 2009, Goldcorp subsequently embarked on a materiality analysis in to understand issues of key importance to our diverse set of stakeholders, and then mapped our top issues, internal initiatives and strategies to the SDGs. This mapping exercise helped us to understand where synergies exist, where gaps should be addressed, and how our current activities can support the achievement of the Goals. As a result, we were able to align our efforts with the SDGs over time, in areas such as environmental protection, human rights, education and community building.

Mining companies have a tremendous impact on communities through the local jobs and supply chains we create. We build physical and institutional infrastructure, and support technology transfer. The resulting growth in products and services can have multiplier effects that improve communities’ financial sustainability over decades.

We also have a responsibility as stewards of the natural environment, ensuring that we minimize the impact of our activities and support the health and wellbeing of our employees and the local communities where we operate. By aligning our sustainability strategies with global initiatives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals – and working in partnership within our industries and with governments – we can create positive impacts for communities worldwide.

While there are many SDGs that Goldcorp identified as aligning with our corporate priorities, a few emerged among our most material topics:

  • Goal #6: Ensure access to water and sanitation
  • Goal #7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, and take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

  • Goal #12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

All of the SDG goals are ambitious, but they provide an important framework for government, industry and communities to collaborate and achieve progress – together – by the year 2030. Goldcorp is proud to be an industry leader that has embedded the SDGs as a core part of our decision-making and performance measurement, every year. We believe it’s important that our stakeholders and communities understand how we are addressing the critical issues outlined in the SDGs, and that we are transparent and accountable for our actions.

SDG Impact

Goal #4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Some of our most innovative educational programs are the first of their kind, such as AMSTEP, a partnership with Oshki-Pimache-O-Win Education and Training Institute (OSHKI) to provide career skills to Aboriginal youth in signatory communities of the Musselwhite Agreement in Ontario, Canada.

For the community of Carrizalillo near our Los Filos site in Mexico, Goldcorp created a local scholarship program, constructed a kindergarten classroom and community computer centre with equipment and internet access, and improved sanitation in the local primary school.

Our Integral Education Community Program at our Marlin mine in Guatemala has funded infrastructure improvements to 182 schools in 77 communities, including installing fully-equipped computer labs, school kitchens and sports fields.

In 2016 alone, 215 students received scholarships from Goldcorp (101 in elementary school, 109 in high school and five in university), and our scholarship program has resulted in 133 graduates.

In total, we have awarded USD$7 million in community scholarships, earning us the National Prize for Community Contribution in Education from the Guatemala Chamber of Commerce.

Goal #6: Ensure access to water and sanitation

Our Water Stewardship Strategy requires that every Goldcorp site must establish water milestones for their local environment, including recycling and stewardship around monitoring and quality. Each site has shown improvement in 2016.

Our Marlin mine team partnered with local Guatemalan Community Development Councils to build infrastructure that ensures access to clean drinking water. We also constructed a US$14 million water management spillway designed to withstand heavy rainfall and flooding – ultimately protecting local waterways.

Goal #7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, and take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Our company-wide Energy Stewardship Strategy ensures we continue to take active steps to manage our energy use and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. We have made significant progress, with GHG emissions trending downward both on an absolute basis and intensity since 2013.

At our Musselwhite mine in Ontario, reducing base load electrical consumption and managing peak demand has allowed the mine to eliminate the use of diesel in production, which saved approximately 13,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2015 alone.

Our all-electric Borden mine in Ontario will eliminate all greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with the movement of ore and waste rock, equal to roughly 50% of the total GHGs on site, or 5,000 tons of CO2 per year

Goldcorp’s other GHG savings (C02 equivalent) are summarized as follows:

  • Marlin – 40,000 tonnes
  • Peñasquito – 90,000 tonnes
  • Los Filos – 9,000 tonnes
  • Red Lake – 450 tonnes of CO2e
  • Éléonore – 18,000 tonnes

Goal #8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work

Our sustainable economic development approach in communities means local hiring and procurement, training, capacity-building, direct community donations and investments, and infrastructure investment.

To ensure gender diversity throughout our organization, we promote Creating Choices, our enterprise-wide training, development and mentorship initiative for women. To date, over 1,700 women have graduated from the program.

We hired graduates of our Aboriginal Mining and Skilled Trades Entry Program (AMSTEP), launched at Musselwhite mine in Ontario in 2015.
Peñasquito mine in Mexico contributed over US$425,000 to the NGO TechnoServe to build competitive farms, businesses and industries. Farmers near the Peñasquito site learned to increase productivity and quality through TechnoServe courses.

In 2016, 80% of our employees were sourced locally and regionally, and 23% of our goods and services were purchased locally.

Éléonore mine in Quebec has donated to Wemindji Business Development Fund to support the Cree by aiding start-ups and boosting employment.

Goal #12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Key among Goldcorp’s waste reduction initiatives is a comprehensive Tailings Stewardship Strategy implemented in 2015 as part of our Sustainability Excellence Management System. At our reclaimed Equity Silver site in British Columbia, we introduced automated monitoring to track information on water levels, pore water pressure, structural integrity of the tailings dam, and other parameters in real-time to ensure tailings dam safety and reliability. If the pilot program is successful, this innovation will be evaluated for deployment at all of Goldcorp’s sites.

Another key aspect of responsible mining is reclamation. Our vision is to make mine closure a smooth transition, with careful management of the environmental and socio-economic challenges as the operation moves through reclamation, monitoring, passive care and eventual transfer to the government or surrounding communities. To-date, we have invested US$28 million at 35 sites in successful mine reclamation activities.

Future Plans

Goal #6: Ensure access to water and sanitation

H2Zero

Water plays a critical role in day-to-day operations at Goldcorp. It’s a valuable resource required for metals production. It’s also one of the most important resources in the world and there is growing scrutiny of its use in all industrial applications, including mining.

That’s why we’ve embarked on an ambitious, multi-year water-reduction strategy with the ultimate goal of leading the mining industry in drastically reducing fresh-water consumption and completely eliminating the use of traditional slurry tailings, currently the largest store of unavailable water in the mining process. The approach, called Towards Zero Water (H2Zero) is ambitious.

The goals of H2Zero are to:

  • Reduce the company’s total water consumption – including a commitment that all new Goldcorp-operated projects will eliminate the use of conventional, wet tailings and will consume 50% less water than Goldcorp’s existing sites do today.
  • Move at least half of all existing operations to >80% water reuse/recycle rates.
  • Use substantially less fresh water (<0.25 m3/t ore milled) in our milling operations.

Borden All-Electric Mine

The days of diesel fuel use on mine sites are numbered as Goldcorp looks to electricity to power its underground mobile fleet at Borden Gold.
Goldcorp’s ambitious ‘mine of the future’ plan will significantly improve the health and safety performance of the mine and reduce its environmental footprint. In an increasingly competitive sector that is facing greater emissions regulation, making the site more operationally efficient – in addition to environmental and health benefits – is a big win. Eliminating diesel will make a huge improvement to working conditions by removing diesel particulate and other gases like NOX and SO2 from the workplace. Our new mining technology will range from battery-operated drilling and blasting equipment, to electric bolters, personnel carriers and ultimately a 40 metric tonne battery powered haul truck.

Our battery and electric mobile equipment will eliminate all greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with the movement of ore and waste rock, equal to roughly 50% of the total GHGs on site, or 5,000 tons of CO2 per year, and will reduce maintenance and energy costs. With the decrease in emissions comes a reduction in underground ventilation needs. The use of an efficient on-demand ventilation system will provide added benefits; the Borden mine will require 50% less ventilation than a baseline diesel underground mine.

Borden will rely on digital and smart controls, including tele-remote technology to maximize equipment use for continuous mining, and will also consider renewable energy such as biomass for heating. Goldcorp is hopeful that demonstrating the numerous benefits of an all-electric site at Borden will be an example of leadership in innovation, clean technologies and health and safety that will be adopted by other mining companies.

SDG Partnerships

Strategic partnerships are critical to making tangible progress in areas where social services are most needed.

We’re proud of the joint endeavor by our Marlin mine and the CanEducate Alliance, which has resulted in a pilot program for primary school children designed to instill a passion for learning from an early age. CanEducate has donated USD$50,000 – partly from funds raised by Goldcorp employees in Canada – and the program provided 150 scholarships for ongoing studies.

Goldcorp’s Metallurgy and Processing group has formed an industrial collaboration project called EcoTails, while internal teams and expert consultants are also collaborating with universities and research institutions. They are reviewing innovations and technologies that could be applied from other sectors’ experiences to help transform the long-term sustainability of mineral processing.

H2Zero reflects Goldcorp’s focus on corporate social responsibility, as well as the company’s commitment to the UN’s Global Compact Initiative and Sustainable Development Goals. In alignment with these commitments, one of Goldcorp’s primary objectives is to ensure that its innovations in water-use reduction can be replicated by other mining companies to create a worldwide impact. To accomplish this, the company is sharing information and best practices with other industry leaders through its partnership with the Canadian Mining Innovation Council and the Canadian Mining Association.

To make our Borden all-electric mine in Ontario a reality, and reduce our reliance of diesel fuel, we’re teaming up with Sandvik Mining and MacLean Engineering
